The identity of the author, John King, is uncertain. From the contents of the letter he is thought to be the second Baron of Ockham, Surrey (d. 1740). Lord King was the second of four children born to Peter King (1669-1734), the first Baron of Ockham and Lord Chancellor of England from 1725 to 1733. Civil engineer, lawyer, Florida pioneer, historian. A native of Salem, Massachusetts, he moved with his family to a farm in New York State when he was young. Disliking a farmer's life, he went to college, attending law school and tutoring to pay his tuition. In 1820 the newly widowed Williams moved to Florida observing changes in the newly acquired territory. Washington Mackey Ives was born September 29, 1843 in St. Augustine, Florida. His family moved to the Lake City area in 1845. Ives enlisted into the 4th Florida Infantry Regiment in the spring of 1862. He served in that unit for the balance of the Civil War and rose to the rank of Regimental Sergeant Major. After the war he returned to Lake City, where he began the practice of law. Ives was elected Mayor of Lake City in 1875 and a County Judge in Columbia County in 1877. He also served as a memb...
