The identity of the author, John King, is uncertain. From the contents of the letter he is thought to be the second Baron of Ockham, Surrey (d. 1740). Lord King was the second of four children born to Peter King (1669-1734), the first Baron of Ockham and Lord Chancellor of England from 1725 to 1733. Disliking a farmer's life, he went to college, attending law school and tutoring to pay his tuition. Washington Mackey Ives was born September 29, 1843 in St. Augustine, Florida. His family moved to the Lake City area in 1845. Ives enlisted into the 4th Florida Infantry Regiment in the spring of 1862. He served in that unit for the balance of the Civil War and rose to the rank of Regimental Sergeant Major.
